Description
Location: Jerome, Idaho
Completed: 2026
Project Type: Expansion
Owner: Idaho Power
Contractor: Michels
Scope of Work:
Grade Tech performed the below-grade civil and finish work on Idaho Power’s Midpoint Substation expansion, a major hub with 345 kV and 500 kV yards. Working under Michels, our crews came in after the pad was built and installed the infrastructure that ties the new equipment into the existing substation.
We excavated and backfilled for more than 40,000 LF of ground grid and installed 2,400 LF of concrete-encased conduit using flowable fill. We also placed more than 2,000 LF of additional conduit, including an offsite run connecting the two yards, along with 1,100 LF of fiber and more than 2,200 LF of cable trench. Our team removed existing piers and prepped and coordinated the installation of new ones.
To finish, we fine-graded the substation and placed 14,000 CY of finish yard rock and road rock. When crews encountered dense basalt (lava) rock below grade, we doubled our crews and equipment to stay on schedule and meet the project’s deadlines.
